Hi everyone, today, I will be explaining how to say I like (noun) and like to (verb) / (verb-ing) in Japanese.

First, let’s focus on how to say I like (noun) in Japanese.

 

私は(noun) が 好きです。

watashi wa (noun) suki desu.

 

(noun) ga suki desu is a phrase to express that i like (noun) in Japanese. ga is a particle used with 'suki desu'.

When you pronounce ‘suki desu’, if you omit the ‘u’ sound after ‘s’ it sounds more natural. like ‘skides’.

In conversation, you can omit the ‘watashi wa’  if the topic is obviously about you.

Also, if you replace the particle 'ga' with 'wa' you can simply emphasize ' I like the (noun) but not the others.' or it also means ' compare to (something) I like the (noun). ' depending on the context. Let’s look at examples.

You may also hear the phrase ‘(verb dictionary form) koto ga suki desu.’ as I like to (verb) / (verb -ing). ‘koto’ also has functions to nominalize verbs and adjectives.  There are nominal differences between ‘no’ and ‘koto’ however so far you can simply memorize, ‘(verb dictionary +no ga suki desu. ‘ is spoken word  while ‘(verb dictionary + koto ga suki desu. ‘ is written word.

 

You can also replace particle 'ga' with 'wa' to emphasize ‘I like to (verb) but not the others. ' or 'compared to (something) I like to (verb).'

'(verb) no ga suki desu' is a phrase to express that I like to (verb)/(verb)ing. The verb before 'no ga suki desu' always has to be in the dictionary form. Particle ‘no’  has functions to nominalize verbs and adjectives.  which means, turn verbs and adjectives into nouns.
